Business Insurance FAQ's:
- 1) If my building becomes vacant, will my regular property policy provide coverage?
- All property policies include a condition that limits or reduces coverage when a building is vacant beyond a certain period of time. Certain coverage, such as vandalism and malicious mischief is completely eliminated. If your building is going to be vacant for more than 30 days, it is best insured by a policy specifically designed to cover vacant buildings.
- 2) Why am I required to carry Workers Compensation coverage if my corporation has no employees?
- It is important to note that Workers Compensation laws vary by state. Generally speaking, executive officers are considered employees of a corporation which makes the coverage compulsory. However, in New York state, for example, if the corporation has only one or two executive officers, they can elect to exclude themselves from coverage and would not have to purchase a Workers Compensation policy (unless they actually hire an employee).
- 3) Does my regular liability policy protect me if one of my employees sues me for wrongful termination or sexual harassment?
- No, the General Liability Policy specifically excludes coverage for losses due to employment related practices. This coverage (EPLI) is available as a separate policy which we recommend to all of our clients.
